Post Description
This 2CD consists of extracts from Lully's Le Bourgois Gentilhomme and Campra's L'Europe Galante. My background is that I love baroque music and I have found French baroque from this particular period to be better than anything else. I come from Handel, Vivaldi, Telemann and Bach etc., but to me French Baroque is just made of pure awesome.
This particular work of Lully has been performed and recorded many times, but the tempo is just slightly slower than my other recordings. This makes it worth listening to and I really enjoy it. I think it suits Lully to be played less frantic (may not be the right word) because it allows the modern listener to better realize the power of the music. The singers are not great opera singers, but I think they are perfect for this kind of music. I feel that this recording is how it could have sounded like when the music was composed and at the same time I'm profoundly moved by the power and emotions.
Campra has not received as much attention as Lully and thus not many recordings of his works exist. He is a composer in the Lully'esque style, and this work in particular leaves no doubt about his this. I should note that this in itself is a thumbs up from me! L'Europe Galante is a wonderful piece with plenty of great little pieces that can be enjoyed again and again. If you are in doubt if you need this recording I think this rare recording of Campra should convince you. This music is rare, well-performed and just not to be missed. The music is wonderful, the performance great and the enjoyment complete.
