Taking four years to write and an additional four to produce, "The Long and Tangled Beard" is Jonathan Cooke's second full-length album under the name "Illustrated Manual." 
Cooke faced many difficulties during the completion of the record including surgery on his vocal cords in 2007. 
Although his voice had not recovered, he continued the project with the help of David Swanson (The Frozen Ocean). 
Cooke relocated to Wyoming during the recording's final tracking and mixing phases. 
Swanson and Cooke completed the record in early 2012 via correspondence.
