Post Description
Say what you will about Thee Oh Sees, but you can’t knock the band’s work ethic. Having released 11 full-length studio efforts since 2004 (that in addition to numerous singles, demos and live recordings), it would be more than understandable if the San Francisco garage heathens wanted to take a break to breathe. Instead, 2013 brings Floating Coffin, another slab of sleazy, surf and psychedelic-infused punk and garage rock nuggets.
While somewhat heavier in stretches, the record is vintage Oh Sees. But for long-time fans, that’s hardly cause for concern. Part of The Oh Sees’ charm rests in the band’s willingness to cocoon itself in the grimy, underground sounds that best suit them, and the record is best represented by songs like “I Come From The Mountain,” “Toe Cutter-Thumb Buster” and “Tunnel Time” that lock into their stock and trade. The band has never been one for branching out, at least not too far. But Floating Coffin proves there’s something to be said for a band that sticks to what it knows.
