Amélie is op zoek naar liefde, en de zin van het bestaan. Ze is een serveerster in het centrum van Montmartre, waar ze contact heeft met haar buren en klanten, alsmede met een mysterieuze foto-verzamelaar. Langzaam realiseert Amélie zich dat de weg naar geluk zich niet vanzelf zal openbaren, maar dat ze hier initiatief voor zal moeten tonen. Zij treft haar geluk door zich in te spannen voor het geluk van anderen.
