Queen In Nuce
A Recorded History Of The Group

The Smile
Earth, April Lady, Polar Bear & Blag
Queen's predessor band, the Smile (Brian May, Tim Staffell and Roger Taylor) had the chance to acquire their reputation thanks to Lou Rezner, responsible for the UK brand of Mercury. In 1969 he accepted to produce their first single. Recorded in Trident Studio, "Earth" (Tim Staffell) and "Step On Me" (May - Staffell) were published as a 7-inch in the USA. Unfornately, as they failed to sell on that market, no release was made in the UK. But Mercury gave a new chance to the group; four tracks were recorded at the "De Lane Lea Studio". None of the material, anyway, was released at that time. One of the recordings, "Doing All Right" (May - Staffell) will be included in Queen's first album three years later. "April Lady", "Polar Bear" and "Blag" will only be released in a limited edition - limited in time and space - several years later.

Larry Lurex
I Can Hear Music & Going Back
A-side and B-side of a 7-inch released in 1973. The single, sung by a mysterious Larry Lurex could have represented the final straw for Queen's stubbing career. In 1973 EMI's publicity machine was set, leading to a majestical explosion of the group on the Marquee stage. But the release of the first album was postponed, and any momentum gained from the gig - that made people talk, although in a cynical way - was lost. The Queen were believed to be a puppet band, manufactured by EMI in compliance with their own specifications. And the release of the album only could have given evidence of the contrary. Then, the Larry Lurex project came out of the blue. The single was certainly not deliberately recorded by the group; it is to be considered as a low-key experiment of Trident Studio that showed a rare taste for bad-timing. Actually, the single was not that bad; the performance is no insult to the group's talents, but it was too far from their usual work. Had the true face of Larry Lurex been revealed too early, the consequences on the image that the Queen were trying to put across could have been disastrous.

I Can Hear Music; written by Greenwich - Spector - Barry; top-ten hit of the Beach Boys in 1969. This version was performed by Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor.

Going Back; cover of Dusty Springfield's song. Performed by the four members of the group.

Queen
Mad The Swine
original 1973 version of a song that became the flipside of the Headlong single in a version remixed many years later.
