Post Description

The renowned English guitar virtuoso Peter White couldn't have come up with a better title for his upcoming release Smile. Another collection of smart, tight, and jazzy tracks from his infinite "vault" of gems, this one makes you do just that: Smile.broadly.Peter White CD

Starting from the lead and title track strutting in confidently in that trademark Peter White fashion (with vocals by none other than saxtress Mindi Abair), the guitarist glides oh-so-smoothly through this album with all the polish he's accumulated over the years. Catchy tracks (and they are all catchy) like the melodic "In Rainbows," the snappy "Floating In Air" (no one does smooth, fluid, and crystal clear better than White, as this tune shows), "Head Over Heels" with its cool guitar harmonics and up-tempo happy groove we came to love so long ago on albums like Promenade and Excusez Moi, and the funky mid-tempo groove "Nightfall" all convince you that you are truly in the right place if you've come to experience Peter White, one of the architects of the smoothest of smooth jazz.

The party doesn't stop there as White uses his hypnotic style to lure you deeper into his kaleidoscopic world of fashionable vibes with the likes of the appropriately titled "Beautiful Love" and the impressive "Don Quixote's Final Quest."

Of "Beautiful Love," his tribute to Barry White, he says, "I was sixteen or seventeen when I heard him back home in England. He did long intros. So, this was my attempt to do something like that - to have the intro just build."

Of "Don Quixote's Final Quest," a piece co-written with keyboardist Freddie Ravel, he offers, "I wrote 'Don Quixote's Final Quest' a long time ago, but I almost didn't put it on the album because it was so different. It took us three days to mix the song - there are so many elements to it. It's my tribute to 'Classical Gas' by Mason Williams, which influenced me to take up the Spanish guitar when I was a kid. This guitar being played finger-style had so much power, I said 'Wow! I want to play guitar like this.'" Well, he does and in a most sophisticated and a bit complex manner with the celestial effect of strings included.

Without a doubt, this is a Peter White album. By the way, this album marks the third in a string of impactful original albums since his last album of covers. Talk about convincing fans that his "vault" of material is far from depleted! Of course, if you have followed the guitarist throughout his contemporary jazz career, you already know that he has never been a stranger to inventing, creating, and feeling new things to put into song, and they always seem to work. Guess what? Smile works. - Ronald Jackson
