indigo [prog]
Indigo biography
INDIGO were formed by keyboardist Gerald Krampl and bassist Norbert Morin after KYRIE ELEISON dissolved in the late 70's. This Austrian band (not to be confused with a Kraut-rock and an American jazz band of the same name) are something of a high-tech version of KYRIE. They combine symphonic prog and commercial pop with concept (fantasy) stories that were popular during the 80's. The English vocals have a strong German accent but are nonetheless palatable.
Their first two albums, the eponymous "Indigo" and "Short Stories", mix large-scale compositions alongside shorter ones. The music is mostly keyboard based and quite melodic, somewhat comparable in style to Tony Banks' but with a tectonic flavour. Unfortunately, the band lost their lead singer after the first album and Krample, who took over vocal duties, sounds a bit thin. "A Collection of Tales. from Past to Present" is interesting as it compiles the proggier tracks from both albums. Perhaps better still is their 1993 release "Silent Memories". Despite being reduced to two members (Krample and one guitarist), the band offers here a more mature set of compositions. With the help of two guest musicians, their (mostly programmed music) still manages to be crafty, spirited and not overly derivative. The cd is a bit uneven but contains two excellent and relatively lengthy tracks worth the price of the album.
Not absolutely essential but could interest fans of 80's era GENESIS or early MARILLION.
