Göteborg Wind Orchestra has its origin in the Gothemburg Tramway's Band which
was formed in 1905 and at the start consisted of just a brass sextet. Over the
years the number of bandsmen gradually increased and quality was raised, partly
by engaging former military bandsmen and, in more recent decades, musicians
with civilian college of music training. As long as the band belonged to the
tramways it was stipulated that bandsmen served as tram drivers etc. during
part of their working time.
Since 1992 the orchestra has been organised as a foundation.
GWO's home venue is Gothenburg's oldest secular building "The Crown house"
(1654), where concerts are performed all year round. ln addition, the orchestra
tours the Gothenburg region, occasionally also abroad.
