Aaron Goodvin’s follow-up to his 2019 album, V, is a seven-track collection that retains the clever songwriting and neotraditional influences of its predecessor while also offering a broader glimpse at what the Alberta-born, Nashville-based artist can do as a writer and vocalist. Hooks abound on Lucky Stars, a phenomenon Goodvin says was entirely intentional. “That’s what country music is all about for me—taking a hook and spinning it around as many times as you can,” he tells Apple Music. Songs such as “Boy Like Me,” the life-affirming title track, and “You Ain’t” balance a sense of playfulness and vulnerability, with Goodvin’s vocal performances steeped in the sounds of ’90s country radio and left-of-center contemporaries like Chris Stapleton.
