ZZ Top Albums

▲ ZZ Top is een Amerikaanse rockband uit Houston (Te-
xas), opgericht in 1969 door Billy Gibbons. Ze behaalde 
haar grootste successen in de jaren 70 en 80. De band-
leden zijn Billy Gibbons (zang en gitaar), Dusty Hill (bas-
gitaar) en Frank Beard (drums). De band valt op door 
haar speciale look: Gibbons en Hill dragen altijd een 
zonnebril, een trenchcoat, en een lange baard. Beard 
heeft in tegenstelling tot wat zijn naam doet vermoeden 
geen baard. Gitarist Billy Gibbons staat bekend om zijn 
onmiskenbare sound, "brown tone". Hij speelt voorname-
lijk op een classic 1959 Gibson Les Paul-gitaar, die hij 
Miss Pearly Gates noemt. Hij speelt met een "peso"-munt-
stuk als plectrum, en maakt veelvuldig gebruik van "fla-
geolets" of "harmonics", zo eigen aan de sound van ZZ 
Top. ZZ Top is een van de weinige rockbands die onaf-
gebroken dezelfde samenstelling behield gedurende 41 
jaar. De oorsprong van de naam van de band is lange 
tijd niet bekend geweest. Er waren verschillende specu-
laties, zoals dat het een een samenvoeging zou zijn van 
twee merken vloe(i)-papier: Zig-Zag en Top; dat het een 
tribuut zou zijn aan blueslegende Z.Z. Hill; en dat het de 
Z-vormige balken van schuurdeuren zouden zijn. Het wer-
kelijke verhaal achter de naam is een ode aan bluesmuzi-
kant B.B. King. Ze wilden de band zelfs Z.Z. King noemen, 
maar dat klonk te veel als die van de blueslegende. Aan-
gezien B.B. King aan top staat/de top is, werd het ZZ Top. 
Bovendien, als je alfabetisch gaat zoeken, en je begint 
achteraan het alfabet, staat ZZ natuurlijk bovenaan (top). 
Op 27 juli 2021 overleed bassist Dusty Hill op 72-jarige 
leeftijd in zijn slaap.▼
