From growing up in a fundamentalist Christian family to his rise through radio and the creation of The Thinking Atheist website and podcast, Andrews presents a compelling narrative that all too many atheists can relate to. He is the everyman and yet it is his ability to tell that story that makes him so extraordinary.

The book is easy to read and extremely captivating. Andrews writes with such passion that he pulls the reading on his emotional rollercoaster. We feel his pain and anguish and his sense of freedom and awe. It really is a journey and as a reader, I felt like I was right there beside him as he took it. But this isn’t merely a testimonial of his deconversion; it is also a resource for Christians who are beginning to have doubts about their own faith. In a chapter titled, “Ignorance is a choice,” Andrews addresses some of the most common questions he and other atheists hear every day.

Still, it was his personal story that was most engaging. If I had one criticism of the book, it would be that I wanted to learn more about how his relationship with his family and friends had changed as a result of his atheism and perhaps how his deconversion had affected his dating life. On the whole, this book was definitely enjoyable and worth the reading. Hopefully it will inspire other atheists to tell their stories.
