Post Description

Matthew Frantz went down a convoluted road to become a folk-influenced singer-songwriter. Frantz first got bitten by the music bug as a child, when his mom’s boyfriend introduced him to thrash metal. “I was like, you know? This is what I want to do,” Frantz said. “I begged my mom for a guitar ... and it eventually bloomed.”
From there, he found his way to blues and jazz by reading interviews with the metal players discussing their influences. “Finally somebody beat me into listening to the Grateful Dead,” he said. That led to Frantz joining the jam band White Rhino. “There were no lyrics, just guitar, bass and drum, sometimes a guest saxophone,” he said. “We were trying to go all night improvising.”
That band’s split gave Frantz the impetus to try something completely different. “I realized I still wanted to play music and I thought I might as well do this folk-indie thing, and I’ve loved it ever since,” Frantz said. “I’m just trying to put in the dues and make it, I guess, trying to just do extensive touring, pretty much, with no breaks,” he said.
He alternates his solo shows with frequent trips to California, where he plays guitar with a jazz band on a monthly basis. After four years of building up his repertoire of songs and getting comfortable in his new genre, Frantz is getting ready to release his debut album, “Odessa Days.”
“It was quite a shift,” he said. “It’s weird. I never wanted to be that front guy singing or anything. I just wanted to be the guitarist in the background. “I like where I am (now) and what I’m doing,” he said. “I miss playing lead guitar, but it’s nice being a singer-songwriter and making the song and not just putting in input.” “I had to find my own voice.”
