Apocalypse World War II toont de Tweede Wereldoorlog zoals die nog niet eerder te zien was. Vaak gefilmd door gewone soldaten en burgers. De beelden zijn volledig gerestaureerd en ingekleurd (een van de duurste restauraties ooit) in HD. Aan de hand van authentieke archiefbeelden wordt van dichtbij de harde realiteit van oorlog  weergegeven.Apocalypse World War II bevat, onder andere, zeldzame opnames van het bloedbad van Katyn in Rusland, de evacuatie van het Britse expeditieleger vanuit Duinkerke, de inhumane behandeling van Franse soldaten die door de Nazi's gevangen waren genomen en de opoffering van Sovjet-soldaten bij Stalingrad.
