National Geographic Channel is hoping to strike it rich in the gold-mining reality genre, acquiring new original series "Yukon Gold" from Paperny Entertainmnet. Skein follows four mining crews in Canada's wild Yukon who have only a few months to mine gold for a big payday. Nat Geo will debut the series next year. "The Yukon is a spectacular part of the world to film in and the miners we follow are not only authentic gold miners, they are also tenacious and heroic," says David Paperny, president of Paperny Entertainment. "Best of all, our cameras film them as they find lots of gold." Programming focused on gold mining has been a ratings success for Discovery, with "Gold Rush" and "Jungle Gold" topping in key demos on Friday nights. Also, Discovery has entered the scripted realm with "Klondike," a mini focused on the gold rush in a frontier town. Nat Geo has toyed with the genre with "Guerrilla Gold Rush" and "Goldfathers," though those skeins have not seen the numbers of Discovery's gold-themed programming. "Yukon Gold" was originally developed for History in Canada and will bow to Canuck auds in early 2013. Show is exec produced by Paperny, Cal Shumiatcher, Audrey Mehler, Beth Wichterich and Lynne Kirby. Robert Palumbo is exec producing for Nat Geo.
