Eindelijk weer een nieuwe Hi-Res ECM plaat na de zomervakantie. Ditmaal een Nordic jazz plaat met veel gepingel op de piano. Met boekjes, herstelbestanden gemaakt in Quickpar. 

Gedurende het afgelopen decennium heeft Tord Gustavsen veel geëxperimenteerd met de samenstelling van zijn ensemble. Op The Other Side keert hij echter weer terug naar het piano trio, waarin hij zich heel comformtabel voelt; goed te horen aan deze plaat. 

Zijn trouwe drummer Jarle Vespestad en getalenteerde nieuwe bassist Sigurd Hole sluiten zich op dit album bij hem aan. Sigurd Hole heeft een andere kijk op zijn instrument – hij gebruikt invloeden uit de volksmuziek en de moderne jazz – waardoor hij perfect past bij Gustavsens langzaam ontwikkelende, melodische stukken.

Over the last decade Tord has explored other ensemble forms and formats, but on The Other Side - recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio in January 2018 – he opens a new chapter in his piano trio story, with faithful drummer Jarle Vespestad, and excellent new bassist Sigurd Hole. Hole’s approach to his instrument, drawing on folk influences as well as modern jazz, is ideally suited to Gustavsen’s slowly-developing, deeply melodic pieces. The album, produced by Manfred Eicher, is issued on the eve of a major tour.
