Shinehead can rap, first of all, and he does this a lot sometimes over reggae beats, or straight beats, sometimes covers etc. Sly's 'Family Affair' is particularly well-covered here. As is Sting's slightly altered "Jamaican in New York". But Shinehead's own work carries itself just as well. He spends a lot of time in the first few cuts blasting rappers on ego trips to great effect. Quite hilarious actually. And there's a strong unpretentious ('roots reggae' or otherwise) spirituality going on here (see "The Real Rock"). Positive message from a guy who can rhyme, yet isn't afraid to break into song (Strive, Try My Love). Verbal gymnastics and straight rap balance out nicely with Jamaican dancehall and other traditions. "Sidewalk University" jams. As does "Let Me In". Rap, sometimes ragga, dominate this album but there's so much other stuff going on as well in terms of melodic hooks and tunes that it's hard to get bored.
