Post Description

Mark Pickerel, for over ten years, has been making music with Screaming Trees member Mark Lanegan, Neko Case, Kurt Cobain and Jeffrey Lee Pierce. He's a smooth-talker, ahem, singer, and his latest album, Tess, results in that sultry and seductive style that knowingly draws one in. Announced on August 12, Tess hits stores on September 17 on Candy Cross Records, and soon after will perform at Bumbershoot Festival, along with radio honcho KEXP, Easy Street Records, and a record release show at Chop Suey. Mark's a busy, busy man!
Tess is an ode to the good ol' days, the Wild West, where Pickerel sings about "empty bottles and broken dreams, where bedrooms are ghost towns and love- while not exactly a battlefield- could easily land you in a jail cell." On his single, "I Study Horses," he sings "I try to reach out for something real, like a shot and a shiver and a stranger shall deliver a fraction of the love I used to give her."
Tess was recorded at Jupiter Studios and produced by Martin Feveyear who's work includes Brandi Carlile and Mark Lanegan. Since Pickerel has worked with dozens of musicians throughout the years, the album hold a high caliber of artists, including guitarist Johnny Sangster of The Tripwires, celloist Barb Hunter of The Gutter twins, Twilight Singers and Visqueen, pedal steel guitarist Margrethe Bjorklund of Jack White, John Doe, and Giant Sand, bassist Eric Church, whose work includes Mark Lanegan and The Cops, Jeff Fielder (Mark Lanegan, Isobel Campbell), guitarist Ian Moore of Roky Erickson and Jason Mraz, drummer Mike Musburger of The Posies and The Supersuckers, and bassist Jim Sangster, whose work has been with The Young Fresh Fellows. Mark Pickerel picked just the right talent to help him craft his collection of songs.
His last album received critical accolades from a variety of sources, including NoDepression.com, who stated that "If a coyote cut a record, it might sound a bit like Pickerel- lonesome and distant and wrought with earnest emotion." Pickerel delivers each song with his rich, baritone voice in a "cinematic and romantica musical setting."
