1. Tatanka vs. Bam Bam Bigelow w/Luna Vachon
Bigelow is substituting an absent Ludvig Borga who was scheduled as Tatanka’s original opponent after he snapped the Native American’s 20 month undefeated streak. This turned out better than expected as they’ve been rivals for quite some time and delivered a fun opener full of athleticism from not very athletic looking individuals.
Grade: B-
2. WWF World Tag Team Championship
The Quebecers (Jacques & Pierre) (c) w/Johnny Polo vs. The Hart Brothers (Bret & Owen Hart)
Outstanding performance by all four competitors that sure made Canada proud. Scientific Wrestling 101 was in session with full of lessons. On a side note, the seeds of the famous Hart family feud was planted at the Survivor Series a few months earlier. The outcome of this match solidified that dissension within the Hart family with Owen breaking away from “the shadow” of Bret. Couldn’t have happened in a better time.
Grade: B
3. WWF Intercontinental Championship
Razor Ramon (c) vs. IRS
Story here is the IRS stole Ramon’s jewelery take up for tax payments. LOL. Anyways, this match didn’t deliver a house and certainly served as a filler for this PPV. However, interference by Shawn Michaels escalated the feud between HBK & Razor leading up to their legendary Ladder Match.
Grade: C-
4. WWF Championship
Casket Match
Yokozuna (c) w/Mr. Fuji & Jim Cornette vs. The Undertaker w/Paul Bearer
Taker was in the midst of a series of feuds with monsters let it be giants, super heavyweights or ominous characters. One thing they all have in common is that their soap opera were very good and the actual matches were stinkers. This one was no exception and this would definitely be up there as one of the worst title matches in history. However, the true highlight of this whole thing was the infamous incident where a group of 9 superstars consisting of Crush, Bam Bam Bigelow, Adam Bomb, Diesel, Jeff Jarrett and others ganged up on the Deadman and sealed him in the casket in a very shocking and strange moment where Taker apparently dies and has his ghost rise up.
Grade: DUD
5. Royal Rumble Match
Participants: Scott Steiner, Samu, Rick Steiner, Kwang, Owen Hart, Bart Gunn, Diesel, Bob Backlund, Billy Gun, Virgil, Randy Savage, Jeff Jarrett, Crush, Doink, Bam Bam Bigelow, Mabel, Sparky Plugg, Shawn Michaels, Mo, Greg Valentine, Tatanka, The Great Kabuki, Lex Luger, Genichiro Tenryu, Rick Martel, Bret Hart, Fatu, Marty Jannetty & Adam Bomb
This rumble was very known for a few reasons. First of all, a chunk of the participants were replacements for injured, absent and fired wrestlers. Second, this would mark the first and only rumble where there are two winners after a very controversial finish. The rumble served it’s purpose but the noticeable replacements weakened the rumble as most of these were either on their way out of the company or doing a one time appearance.
Grade: C+
