While making a home for himself in Europe, Don Cherry was known to walk through cities with his transistor radio, picking up sounds from adopted locales and beyond, something that carried through to live performances where a world of composition and reference would shift at the drop of a hat. Derek Bailey, too, was a tireless investigator of improvisation as a concept linking diverse approaches, even as his music was often abstract. The diversity of influence picked up through lived experience is something that has always imbued creative music, but it's not often called out as such. Norwegian bassist-composer and bandleader Ingebrigt Håker Flaten is a weighty technician who has drawn from the well of life by playing and hearing as much as possible. It is not enough, after all, to be "the Paul Chambers of the new avant-garde" - Flaten must live and develop this music under his own steam.

From Trondheim and Oslo, to Chicago, and now residing in Austin, Texas, Flaten has traversed a variety of "homes" as well as the experiences and creative subcultures of touring life. Steadily in-demand as a sideman and co-leader, he remains steadfast in his own unique, broad vision as an artist. In 2004 he established his first group as a bandleader, a quintet consisting of musicians from Oslo and Stockholm. When he moved to Chicago in 2006, the idea of a group traveled along with him. Flaten kept the instrumentation from the Scandinavian unit, but changed the parts and called on established Windy City players Frank Rosaly (drums), Dave Rempis (saxophones), and Jeff Parker (guitar) to join himself and violinist Ola Kvernberg to form a new group. Vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz came on board in summer 2011 to round out the Ingebrigt Håker Flaten Chicago Sextet.

While each of these individuals has an extensive pedigree, the important thing to remember is that they've never been heard quite like this. The ensemble has established its own eclectic style that draws inspiration from the combined references of among others Chris McGregor, Derek Bailey, George Russell, Ingmar Bergman, pop melody and punk grit, as well as everyday sights and sounds. After several tours and a CD (2008's The Year of the Boar on Jazzland), it wasn't until debuting the Sextet at 2011's Internationales Jazzfestival Saalfelden that Flaten clarified this lineup's potential. This concert was in 2012 released by Tektite Records as the limited edition LP 'live at jazzfest saalefeden'. August same year the band played at Lisbon's Jazz Em Agosto. Filmic and throaty, fueled by the beat and by freedom, folksy and cutting-edge, the Ingebrigt Håker Flaten Chicago Sextet is a band to keep a bead on.
