Post Description

Soprano Simone Kermes sings the aria "Se non dovesse il piè" from Nicola Porpora's opera "Flavio Anicio Olibrio" (Rome, 1722). Se non dovesse was likely inserted into the first run of the opera in 1722; the character who sings this delightful aria is unknown. It certainly is an interesting aria with a simple, yet effective melody, orchestrated for pizzicato (plucked) strings. Here's the libretto: "If I did not have to leave without you, freedom would be sweeter to my spirit. Forced to leave you, to whom I owe my life, and whom I love, how can my faithful loving heart do so without suffering?" (Aria text by an unknown poet). "Se non dovesse il piè" is a track from Simone Kermes' latest CD "Lava", featuring opera arias from 18th century Naples written for the great castratos of the period. Simone is accompanied by Claudio Osele and his orchestra Le Musiche Nove playing on authentic instruments.
