LAST EXIT is a powerhouse avant-garde rock band composed of an all-star lineup of free jazz musicians who had strong connections to NYC's 1980's 'punk jazz' scene. Formed in 1986, LAST EXIT quit performing in the early 1990s and formally disbanded when guitarist Sonny SHARROCK passed away in 1994. Although the pedigree of each member, except bassist Bill LASWELL, veered towards the world of jazz, LAST EXIT was a heavy rock band that played with extreme loud volume and borrowed more influence from noisy post-punk bands like SWANS and SONIC YOUTH than any previous jazz artists. On the other hand, the members of LAST EXIT could elevate their music beyond the sludge of typical noise rock through their highly developed improvisational skills honed from working with all the avant jazz greats in NYC and Europe.
