Post Description
Broadchurch Series 2was first announced at the end of the closing credits of Episode 1.8, on the 22 April, 2013, with a title card with the words "BROADCHURCH WILL RETURN".
A second series was always a possibility for Broadchurch, with writer Chris Chibnall saying that "When I first talked to Peter Fincham and Laura Mackie, ITV’s Director of Drama about Broadchurch, I mentioned that if people liked it, there was another very different story we could tell afterwards. I'm really thrilled we're going to tell that story too." The commissioning of series two didn't occur until partway through the original series of Broadchurch when it was confirmed to be a hit with the audience, dragging in an average of 9 million people per episode, the third highest weekday audience share since 2002. [1]
Details of series 2 were held tightly, with everything from plot elements to series premise to certain members of the cast being kept a secret until the broadcast of Episode 2.1 on 5 January 2015. The details were kept so close that not even journalists had advanced copies of episodes to review, something that is almost unheard of in the modern TV industry. [2] However, some details were revealed before hand, including:
◾ That the returning cast would include David Tennant as DI Alec Hardy, Olivia Colman as DS Ellie Miller, Jodie Whittaker as Beth Latimer, Andrew Buchan as Mark Latimer, Arthur Darvill as Reverend Paul Coates, Charlotte Beaumont as Chloe Latimer, Joe Simms as Nige Carter, Carolyn Pickles as Maggie Radcliffe, and Jonathan Bailey as Olly Stevens, along with Simone McAullay as Becca Fisher, Adam Wilson as Tom Miller, and Tanya Franks as Lucy Stevens.
◾ New cast members would include Charlotte Rampling as Jocelyn Knight, Eve Myles as Claire Ashworth, Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Sharon Bishop, James D'Arcy as Lee Ashworth, Meera Syal as Sonia Sharma, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Abby Thompson. All we know about these characters apart from their names is that “They are not grieving relatives, they aren’t the relatives of another body,” according to Chibnall.
◾ According to Chibnall, "it’s not another crime case. [...] The end is where it begins. I promise we do not start with the discovery of another body beneath the cliffs."
◾ "The feel of the show is slightly different this time… Grief is not our driving emotion this year," says Chibnall.
◾ Clues were planted in Series 1 for Series 2.
◾ The conclusion of Series 2 is unknown even to the cast, as several versions were filmed. It will apparently be a shock ending.
◾ No third series had been commissioned by the time Series 2 began airing, although there were rumours that one could be made
