Roland Joffé's drama vertelt het waargebeurde verhaal van de vriendschap tussen New York Times journalist Sydney Schanberg (Sam Waterston) en de Cambodjaanse journalist en tolk Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor), in het door burgeroorlog verscheurde Cambodja. Wanneer de Rode Khmer de macht overneemt, is Sydney gedwongen het land te verlaten en wordt Dith Pran gevangen gezet. Beide mannen blijven vechten om elkaar weer in levende lijve terug te kunnen zien.
