Post Description
Doc Watson is one of those artists whose story is so compelling his music risks getting lost in the tale, or would if he were anyone but Doc Watson. But Watson's innovations in flatpicking and his cross genre influences on artist who have become legends in their own right ensure that Doc Watson's music is his legacy. Now that legacy is collected in an easily digested 2-disc retrospective from Sugar Hill Records.
"The Definitive Doc Watson" is set to release on July 16 on Sugar Hill Records. The 34 track project is one of those rare career retrospectives serves both newcomers and fans equally well. Spanning Watson's entire career, including the many albums recorded with his son Merle and select guest appearances he made on other artists' recordings. For the uninitiated, the 2-disc set's $20-25 price tag puts it into much easier reach than many career retrospective boxes for those wondering what the fuss has been about since Watson's death in May of 2012.
For hardcore fans, it's likely they already have all of the songs on this album. Unlike larger 4-5 disc box sets, having only 34 tracks to tell the tale of Doc Watson means "The Definitive Doc Watson" stays focused on the hits. But there are two reasons for fans to pick up the set. First, it's a reasonably priced "one stop shop" for Doc Watson hits without having to juggle a dozen albums or create a custom Ipod playlist. But the most compelling reason for fans to pick up the set is for the two liner note essays by Sugar Hill's Fred Jasper and journalist Derek Halsey.
There's nothing particularly revelatory here, especially for those who have read the excellent biography "Blind But Now I See" by Kent Gustavson, but both essays are nice synopses of Watson's compelling story, obviously written by men who are huge fans of Doc Watson. Halsey's essay especially is fun because of the quotes he incorporates from artists who have been influenced by Watson, including Sam Bush, Garrison Keillor, and Bryan Sutton.
Whether you're a long time fan of Doc Watson or someone who is curious due to Doc Watson name checks by younger folk artists, "The Definitive Doc Watson" is a reasonably priced and ultimately satisfying add to your collection. "The Definitive Doc Watson" releases on July 16 from Sugar Hill Records.
