UB40 Albums
Collection 1980-2015

UB40 is een reggae- en popgroep uit Birmingham, Groot-
Brittannië. UB40 is opgericht in 1978. In de 35 jaar van haar 
bestaan heeft de band verschillende grote hits gehad, waar-
onder meerdere nummer 1-noteringen, voornamelijk coverver-
sies. Enkele bekende hits van UB40 zijn I got you babe, Sing 
our own song, Red red wine en Kingston Town. De naam 
UB40 is ontleend aan een voormalig formulier van de Engelse 
sociale dienst om een werkloosheidsuitkering (UB = Unemploy-
ment Benefit) aan te vragen. De band heeft een sterk multi-
cultureel karakter, zowel muzikaal als qua afkomst; de leden 
hebben hun wortels liggen in Engeland, Schotland, Ierland, Ja-
maica en Jemen. UB40 wordt op 1 januari 1978 opgericht door 
een stel werkloze vrienden die behalve hun jeugd ook een voor-
liefde voor reggae delen. Ali Campbell kreeg in een café ruzie 
met iemand die zijn favoriete muziek afkraakte en tijdens de 
ontstane vechtpartij verloor hij bijna z'n linkeroog. De schade-
vergoeding, 4000 pond, die hij kreeg wordt gebruikt om de 
instrumenten van te kopen. Nog voordat ze die überhaupt on-
der de knie hebben zijn Ali en Brian al bezig om overal posters 
op te hangen. Op 8 februari 1979 hebben de Joebies hun eerste 
optreden op een verjaardagsfeest in een lokale kroeg (de Hare & 
Hounds). Astro maakt dan nog geen deel uit van de band; hij is 
slechts degene die de band aankondigt en af en toe meetoast. 
Het publiek is hier zo van onder de indruk dat Astro een vaste 
plek krijgt als trompettist/zanger. Dergelijke scenario's spelen 
zich destijds ook af bij Madness en The Specials. UB40 staat re-
gelmatig in het voorprogramma van stad/streekgenoten The Beat 
en The Selecter, waardoor de pers automatisch aanneemt dat dit 
de volgende band gaat worden op het 2 Tone-label van Specials-
brein Jerry Dammers. UB40 wil echter niets te maken hebben met 
de skagolf ("Pure nostalgie") en tekent een contract bij Graduate
alvorens een eigen label (DEP International) te starten.
