John Eliot Gardiner carefully researched these works in order to be as faithful as possible to Beethoven's original intentions. Though this research is indeed scholarly that is not to mean that these performances are cold and academic - far from it - these are bold, fresh performances that breathe new life into these works. The Orchestre Revolutionary et Romantique perform on period instruments following Beethoven's original, smaller, orchestrations. A smaller ensemble doesn't mean a smaller sound, far from it, the result is cleaner with each line coming through more clearly than we're accustomed to hearing. These performances can be recommended to anyone interested in these symphonies, not just period instrument enthusiasts.
