Mark Knopfler, the former Dire Straits frontman, helped to create some of the
most enduring tracks in the history of British rock and roll - Money for
Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, Sultans of Swing and, of course, Brothers in Arms -
even if he now prefers to spend his time making country and folk albums with the
American singer Emmylou Harris. Brothers in Arms the album was announced
yesterday to have been the fifth biggest-selling album of all time in Britain
(and was the first in the world to sell a million copies on CD). ALife in
Songs, which airs tonight on BBC Four, is a documentary which takes a meandering
look at KnopflerÆs career, from his beginnings in the north-East of England to
global superstardom in the mid-80s. Using a mixture of archive performance
footage and intimate interviews with the man himself, it shows us how Dire
Straits was forged in the late 1970s on the back of a handful of demo songs (one
of which was Sultans of Swing), and how his own distinctive bluesy guitar-
playing and drawling vocal style matured. The programme also touches on his
second career as a producer and composer of film scores (he wrote the soundtrack
for Local Hero and The Princess Bride, among others). Considering the scale of
his fame (certainly at its height), Knopfler seems remarkably unaffected, and
offers sensible perspective on his own career. Never much of a hell-raiser, he
nowprefers a cup of tea beside him when he performs. A thoroughly British pop
star.
