Post Description
late Karen Dalton (1938-1993) remains the muse for countless folk-rock musicians from Bob Dylan to Devendra Banhart, from Lucinda Williams to Joanna Newsom. Legendary performer Lacey J. Dalton chose her last name when she took her first steps in country music. Karen Dalton is still an influence on performers today - her timeless, slightly cold, blues-infused Native American spirit influenced Dylan ("The Basement Tapes") and Nick Cave ("When I First Came To Town"). Recorded over 6 months in 1970-71 in Bearsville, "In My Own Time" was Dalton's only thoroughly planned and realized studio album.
The material has been carefully selected and compiled by its producer and musician Harvey Brooks, a re-imagining jazz rocker who has played for Dylan on "Highway 61 Revisited" and for Miles Davis on "Bitches Brew". These ten songs by Karen have an incredible ability to pierce the heart of any listener, from the broodingly detached "One Night of Love", to the dark tragedy of "Katie Cruel", a reinterpretation of North American folklore. Known as a skilled interpreter of high-end musical material, Dalton reaches the heights of both country and soul music with a haunting version of George Jones's "Take Me" and Holland-Doisier Holland's "How Sweet It Is".
