Kirsty McGee is a singer-songwriter and guitarist. She began performing on the Manchester band scene when she was 14 and later moved onto the acoustic music scene, where she has built herself a reputation with well-crafted original songs. In 2000 McGee won the Northwest songwriting competition organised by the Buskers' Ball and recorded her first release under her own name; "Rock & Roll". McGee has also been involved in environmental protest, including the campaign against Manchester Airport's second runway.
McGee's first two albums, "Honeysuckle" and "Frost" won her nominations from the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards (Best Newcomer for "Honeysuckle", 2002; Best Original Song for "Coffee Coloured Strings", 2004). She has worked on her Studio albums with producers John Wood, Boo Hewerdine, Neill MacColl, Mike West and Mat Martin.
McGee used to perform in a duo with Mat Martin. The duo formed the core of quartet The Hobopop Collective in 2007 as a response to their experiences with the music industry and out of a desire to reinvigorate a sense of community amongst DIY artists. The ethic that governed their work was one of respect and genuine enthusiasm for music and people, and the group performed McGee's material from 2007-2011 in collaboration with many guest artists. McGee has worked with musicians such as Mike West, Danny Schmidt, Karine Polwart and Inge Thomson, and opened for Suzanne Vega, Eddi Reader and Capercaillie. In January 2011, McGee was nominated for The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards under the Live Performance category for No.5. The album won its category in the public vote later that year.
