Stranded somewhere on the metaphysical back roads separating the juke joints of Saturday nights and the revival tents of Sunday mornings, Fern Jones' sole major-label effort, Sing a Happy Song, exists in the space between rockabilly and gospel, capturing the energy and passion of both but selling to fans of neither -- its commercial failure single-handedly ended Jones' long career, guaranteeing this kind of pure, deeply felt amalgam of secular and spiritual music would not be heard again. The typically excellent Numero Group reissue The Glory Road features Sing a Happy Song in its remastered entirety, fleshed out by four songs from her earlier private-press recordings -- Jones' voice occasionally recalls Patsy Cline, substituting Pentecostal fervor for Cline's devastating poignancy, and her backing band, including Elvis session vets Floyd Cramer, Hank "Sugarfoot" Garland, and Buddy Harman, is exemplary, rivaling the kinetic charge of anything coming out of Sun Records.
