Post Description
CD24-27 van Franz Joseph Haydn, The Complete Symphonies, de nrs. 81-90
door Philharmonia Hungarica olv. Antal Dorati.
Thirty-three (!) discs containing all of Haydn's 104 symphonies plus the Sinfonia Concertante. These are Dorati's landmark recordings which I think remain the best complete cycle of Haydn's symphonies available.
The story is well known of how the Philharmonia Hungarica was formed from Hungarian musicians fleeing their homeland after the Hungarian Uprising. Antal Dorati conducted them in a recording of the complete Haydn symphonies.
Until then it had never been done before, but in this mammoth undertaking his and the orchestra's standards never fell. The whole enterprise is marked by freshness and vitality. It was a triumph that has endured ever since and no matter what new recordings are made, this work holds its place at the top of the list.
This is billed as a limited edition, and I don't know for how long it will be available, but while it is, I recommend that you snap it up. It will give you pleasure for years and years.
