Frank Zappa - 5 Hours of 25 years of Frank Zappa

I (D. Hotch) made a compilation of unofficial material for David Morgan, the director of the Youngstown
State University Frank Zappa Jazz Band. My concept was to capture one highlight from portions
of each tour, starting at FZ's Mount St. Mary's show in 1963 and concluding with the 1988 tour.
I tried to factor in jazz noise, sonic quality, unique tunes, documentary moments and minimal
repetition of titles. The ideal time length was to be four full CD's with an average of 75 minutes
each. I changed some files along the way and ended up with a fifth CD of outtakes.

The working title: 5 Hours of 25 Years of Frank Zappa

Disc One:

(01) 1963 05 19 Mt.St.Mary's L.A. - 02 Piece #2 of Visual Music
(02) 1966 06 24~25 San Francisco CA - 04 Handsome Cabin Boy Jam
(03) 1967 10 01 Copenhagen DK - 08 Toads Of The Short Forest
(04) 1968 04 28 (E) Detroit MI - 06 Medley (Cabin Boy-Wedding Dress-Dog Breath-Little House)
(05) 1969 05 23 Appleton WI - 04 Eye Of Agamotto
(06) 1970 03 07 Los Angeles CA - 04 Twinkle Tits
(07) 1970 05 15 Los Angeles CA - 18 Oh No~Orange County Lumber Truck (incl. Linda Lu)
(08) 1970 11 14 (E) Fillmore East NYC - 06 Holiday in Berlin
(09) 1971 12 04 Montreaux SW - 10 King Kong
(10) 1971 12 10 London UK - 11 King Kong

Disc One repeated and potentially eliminated King Kong but the first is the Montreaux fire and
the second is just prior to Frank being knocked off the stage, both worthy documentary moments.

Disc Two:

(11) 1972 09 15 Berlin DE - 03 Big Swifty
(12) 1972 12 02 (E) Kansas City MO - 07 Little Dots
(13) 1973 05 xx Unknown Venue - 10 Farther Oblivion
(14) 1973 10 26 Austin TX - 12 King Kong, Chunga's Revenge, Mr Green Genes
(15) 1974 05 12 South Bend IN - 11 Dupree's Paradise pt.2
(16) 1974 09 25 Gothenburg SE - 13 Flambay

Disc Two again contains a segment of King Kong but also contains a unique performance of Flambay.

Disc Three:

(17) 1975 05 23 El Paso TX - 07 Pound for a Brown
(18) 1975 10 23 Boston MA d2 - 06 Swallow My Pride
(19) 1976 11 19 Detroit MI - 22 Stranded In The Jungle
(20) 1977 10 30 New York NY - 18 Wild Love
(21) 1978 02 15 Berlin DE - t2a Little House I Used to Live In
(22) 1978 09 21 Poughkeepsie NY - 26 Black Napkins
(23) 1979 02 12 Manchester UK - 02 Persona Non Grata

Disc Three features several unusual songs and those helped minimize the song repetition factor.

Disc Four:

(24) 1980 06 11 (E) Paris FR - 17 If Only She Woulda
(25) 1980 11 13 (L) Pittsburgh PA - 19 Heavy Duty Judy (I was there)
(26) 1981 11 17 New York NY - 23 Black Page #2
(27) 1982 07 04 Bologna IT - 21 King Kong
(28) 1984 08 25 New York NY - t1b Dumb All Over (including tape-changing music)
(29) 1988 03 17 Binghamton NY - 17 Let's Move To Cleveland (I was also there)
(30) 1988 06 09 Genova IT - 21 Illinois Enema Bandit (last song of the last tour)

Disc Four includes a complete King Kong as justification for the repeated title but also includes
the 'world premiere' of Heavy Duty Judy. I was at the Cleveland show a week earlier where I
remembered the HDJ riff from The Torture Never Stops. A week later in Pittsburgh it was given a
life of its own.

Disc Five (outtakes):

(31) 1969 06 05 Portsmouth UK - 04 Transylvania Boogie
(32) 1977 10 02 St.Louis MO - 08 Conehead
(33) 1978 10 15 (E) Stony Brook NY - 10 Conehead
(34) 1978 10 27 (E) Palladium NYC - 02 Intro Guitar Solo
(35) 1981 11 13 Syracuse NY - 25 Pound For A Brown
(36) 1981 11 17 The Ritz NYC - 13 Drowning Witch
(37) 1988 03 25 Uniondale NY - t1b Torture Solo

It was a fun project but I never managed to deliver it to David Morgan, maybe some day...!
