On Death Row
Season 2

Werner Herzog's Into the Abyss debuted in September 2011 to rave reviews and festival buzz from Telluride to Toronto. Exploring the intricate details and emotional aftermath of a triple homicide in Conroe, Texas, Herzog sought to better understand the impact of life in prison and the shattering effects of the death penalty. Of the two young perpetrators featured in the film, one will spend most of hislife in prison while the other was executed just eight days after his interview with Herzog.

In season two of the four-part companion television series, ON DEATH ROW, created by Herzog exclusively for Investigation Discovery (I.D.), the Academy-Award nominatedfilmmaker dives deeper into the abyss of the human soul. Through interviewswith four additional inmates awaiting their appointment with a lethal injection, Herzog conducts a uniquely thought-provoking analysis of why people, and the state, kill.

Each episode of ON DEATH ROW features an intense interview with a death row inmate to hear their own account of life in captivity and the crime that condemnedthem. While German-born Herzog respectfully disagrees with capital punishment, the series is not focused on the politics surrounding the death penalty. Instead, in true Herzog style, he explores the emotions that these men and women go through as they possess the haunting knowledge of exactly when - and how - they are going to die.

Robert Fratta:
Herzog explores the thoughts and character of death row inmate Robert Fratta, sentenced in 1996 for the murder of his wife, Farah, who was gunned down in the family garage in Texas. Sexual deviation, bitterdivorce proceedings, and a killer for hire all figure into the unfolding conversation between Herzog and the condemned man, who maintains his innocence, despite overwhelming evidence of guilt exposed in two separate trials. Facts and events surrounding Farah's murder are recounted on screen by authorities and family members most closely connected to the case, as are the bizarre rituals and contradictions of Fratta's diagnosed narcissistic personality disorder.

Darlie Routier:
Filmmaker Werner Herzog explores a crime with no discernible motive. In 1996, two of Darlie Routier's young sons were brutally stabbed to death in Texas. Just seven months later, the once doting mother was convicted of murder and sentenced to death by lethal injection. Through compelling testimonies from investigators and Routier's family members, Herzog offers an unflinching look at this heinous crime.

Blaine Milam:
In an intimate conversation with condemned inmate Blaine Milam, filmmaker Werner Herzog peels back the layers of mystery surrounding the brutal death of Milam's infant daughter. Postpartum psychosis, methamphetamines and Ouija boards were reported to have played a role in the brutality.

Douglas Feldman:
On July 31, 2013 Texas death row inmate Douglas Feldman was executed by lethal injection. Not long before his sentence was fulfilled, filmmaker Werner Herzog sat down with the former financial analyst turned road-rage murderer. Through candid interviews, Herzog exposes the surprising dimensions of Feldman's personality.
